The Problem with Medicine Today: “Lather, Rinse, Repeat.”

Growing up in the 1960’s and 70’s I remember that most people had a family physician who would see them in the office or in the hospital. This doctor supervised care by specialist physicians and healthcare affiliates.  Our family doctor was Harold Kravitz.   Dr. Kravitz knew my name, my brother’s names, and my dog’s name!  He coordinated all my care.  I can remember him patiently explaining any diagnosis or test result and always looking out for my best interests.  I even remember when family doctors would assist your surgeon in the operating room, deliver babies, and even make house calls!  Your relationship with your doctor was long term and personal.

Unfortunately, health care has changed for the worse.   Doctors are busy, rushed, and lousy communicators.  Specialty physicians trample all over primary care physicians.   Medical doctors, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants are collectively referred to as “providers” despite great differences in training and knowledge.   To make matters worse, primary care physicians are regularly shuffled by HMO’s or no longer contracted to your insurance plan. A new specialist called a “hospitalist” provides care when you are in the hospital and rotates every shift with a different hospitalist.  No one knows your name let alone your dog’s name! Multiple obstacles lead to disconnected care, medical errors and frustration for patients and families.  You’re just another bottle of shampoo!
